Understanding and controlling the relationship of the learning environment to the effectiveness of learning is a component of Instructional Design. There are many factors that affect the suitability of learning environments. Controlling these variables helps to make learners more alert and eliminate distractions. For classrooms, these include good acoustics and lighting, the quality of audio-visual equipment, elimination of extraneous noise, and comfortable seating. For computer-related curriculum delivery in a classroom, it is important that learners have access to proper equipment to avoid the frustrations associated with slow response time.

A responsibility of the training department in any organization is to ensure that training facilities are well-designed and meet the specific needs associated with the curriculum.
