If your organization develops large quantities of training material, it is generally worth the effort to track the development time, and to compare it to industry averages. Industry averages can be found through research, andаfrom organizations such as the American Society for Training Development (ASTD). It is typically tracked in hours of development time per hour of training (differentiated byаeLearning or ILT), and as to whether the development is new or an update.
There are many factors that affect development time. These include:
- Ability to leverage existing content
- Developmentаtools used
- Availability of Subject Matter Experts
- Complexity of the content
- Knowledge and experience of the training developer
- Quality standards
Tracking development time will allow you to identify trends and focus on areas for improvement.
