The term blended learning is prevalent in recent literature related to training. However, there is no universally accepted definition of what blended learning actually is. Often, a blended learning approach is thought of as being a mixture of classroom-based instructor-led training (ILT) and eLearning. In fact, a blended learning approach can and should be thought of as potentially using any possible delivery mechanism. For example, simple or automated job aids, mobile learning solutions, certification programs, and a range of follow-up activities can all be effective elements of a blended learning approach. Informal training, which encompasses several different possible learning mechanisms such as mentoring, should be considered part of the blended learning spectrum.

The goal of blended learning is to prescribe a sequence of learning elements that optimize knowledge transfer, while reducing cost and allowing for "just in time training" (training that is delivered when most needed, e.g. right before the introduction of a new product). One approach is to УfadeФ the amount of direct guidance provided to learners over time as they progressively master the content.

Organizations should continuously seek opportunities to optimize the blend of learning opportunities to promote efficiency and lower costs.
